(5) The Tale of the Just Nushirvan and the Old Farmer

Text and Translation

Nushirvan was riding his horse like an arrow,
On the road, he saw an old man bent like a bow.
That old man was planting several trees,
The king said to him, 'Since your hair has become white as milk,
Since you will not remain for many more days,
Why are you planting trees here?'
The old man said to the king, 'Your reasoning is sufficient;
Since many planted for our sake,
So that we might benefit from it today,
We too should plant for others.
One must walk a step according to one's capacity,
For in every step, order is required.'
The king was pleased by the old man's speech,
He filled his hand with gold and said, 'Take this.'
The old man said to him, 'O victorious king,
My tree has borne fruit this very day!
What does it matter if my age has exceeded seventy?
You know well that this planting of mine did not turn out badly.
This planting did not make me wait ten years,
For this very day, it yielded a harvest of gold.'
Since this answer pleased the king even more,
He bestowed upon him the land, the village, and its water.
You must perform a deed today,
For without a deed, you will have no fruit.
You must set foot upon the path of faith,
You must cast arrogance upon the ground.
If you are a man, with the virtues of men,
Sweep the place of purity.
Do you not feel shame, with such strength in your arm,
To place your own stone on the scale?
You are lesser than a dog, listen to this word,
If you consider yourself greater than a dog.
