(۲) حکایت مرد نمازی و مسجد و سگ / (2) The Tale of the Praying Man, the Mosque, and the Dog

متن و ترجمه / Text and Translation

شبی در مسجدی شد نیک مردیکه در دین داشت اندک مایه دردی
One night, a good man entered a mosque,
who had a small amount of devotion in his religion.
عزیمت کرد آن شب مرد دلسوزکه نبود جز نمازش کار تا روز
That compassionate man made a firm resolve that night,
that his work until daybreak would be nothing but prayer.
چو شب تاریک شد بانگی برآمدکسی گفتی بدان مسجد درآمد
When the night became dark, a sound arose,
as if someone had entered the mosque.
چنان پنداشت آنمرد نمازیکه هست آن کاملی در کارسازی
The praying man imagined thus,
that it was some perfect master in spiritual matters.
بدل گفتا چنین جائی چنین کسبرای طاعت حق آید و بس
He said to himself, 'In such a place, such a person
comes only for the worship of God.
مرا این مرد نیکو هوش داردنماز و طاعتم را گوش دارد
This good man will keep me mindful,
he will listen to my prayer and worship.'
همه شب تا بروزش بود طاعتنیاسود از عبادت هیچ ساعت
All night until morning he was in worship,
he did not rest from devotion for a single hour.
دعا و زاری بسیار کرد اوگهی توبه گه استغفار کرد او
He made many prayers and lamentations,
at times repenting, at times seeking forgiveness.
بجای آورد آداب و سنن رانکو بنمود الحق خویشتن را
He performed the rites and customs,
he showed himself very well indeed.
چو صبح صادق از مشرق برآمدوزان نوری بدان مسجد درآمد
When the true dawn arose from the east,
and light entered the mosque from it,
گشاد آن مرد چشم آنجا نهفتهیکی سگ بود در مسجد بخفته
that man opened his eyes, which had been closed in contemplation,
and saw a dog asleep in the mosque!
ازان تشویر خون در جانش افتادچو باران اشک بر مژگانش افتاد
From that shame, blood fell into his soul,
and tears like rain fell upon his eyelashes.
دلش بر آتش حجلت چنان سوختکه از آه دلش کام و زبان سوخت
His heart burned so intensely on the fire of shame,
that his palate and tongue burned from the sigh of his heart.
زبان بگشاد گفت ای بی ادب مردترا امشب بدین سگ حق ادب کرد
He opened his tongue and said: 'O ill-mannered man!
Tonight, God disciplined you by means of this dog.
همه شب بهر سگ در کار بودیشبی حق را چنین بیدار بودی
All night you were performing deeds for a dog!
Had you ever been awake like this for God?
ندیدم یک شبت هرگز باخلاصکه طاعت کردی از بهر خدا خاص
I have never seen you sincere for a single night,
performing worship purely for the sake of God.
بسی سگ بهتر از تو ای مرائیببین تا سگ کجا و تو کجائی
Many dogs are better than you, O hypocrite!
See where the dog is and where you are.
ز بی شرمی شدی غرق ریا تونداری شرم آخر ازخدا تو
Out of shamelessness, you became drowned in hypocrisy,
do you have no shame before God?
چو پرده برفتد از پیش آخرچه گوئی با خدای خویش آخر
When the veil is finally removed from before you,
what will you say to your Lord?
کنون چون پایگاه خود بدیدمامید از کار خود کلی بریدم
Now that I have seen my own station,
I have completely cut off hope from my deeds.
ز من کاری نیاید در جهان نیزوگر آید سگان را شاید آن نیز
No work will come from me in the world anymore,
and if it does, it might only be fit for dogs.
چرا خواهی حریف دیو بودنز نقش و از صفت کالیو بودن
Why do you want to be a companion of the demon,
and be foolish in form and attribute?
ازین ظلم آشیان دیو بگریزوزین زندان پر کالیو بگریز
Flee from this nest of oppression of the demon,
and escape from this prison full of fools.
چه می خواهی ازین دجال بانانچه می جوئی ازین مهدی نمایان
What do you want from these keepers of the Dajjal (Antichrist)?
What do you seek from these who pretend to be the Mahdi?
ترا چون دشمنی از دوستانستخسک در راه تو از بوستانست
Since you have enmity from friends,
thorns in your path are like a garden.
بسی دجال مهدی روی هستندکه چون دجال از پندار مستند
There are many Mahdi-faced Dajjals,
who, like the Dajjal, are drunk on delusion.
پی دجال جادو چند گیرینه وقت آمد که آخر پندگیری
How long will you follow the sorcerous Dajjal?
Is it not time that you finally take advice?
اگر آخر زمان زین ناتمامیپی دجال گیرد هفت گامی
If, in the end of times, due to this imperfection,
one takes seven steps after the Dajjal,
چنین نقلست از دانندهٔ رازکه نتواند که زو گردد دمی باز
thus it is narrated by the knower of secrets,
that he will not be able to turn back from him even for a moment,
متابع گردد او را در همه حالبماند جاودان در خیل دجال
he will follow him in every state,
and remain forever in the host of the Dajjal.
کسی کو هفت گامی کان نه دینستپی دجال برگیرد چنین است
He who takes seven steps that are not of faith,
following the Dajjal is like this.
کسی هفتاد سال از مکر و تلبیسنهد گام ای عجب بر گام ابلیس
What of him who for seventy years, out of deceit and delusion,
places his footsteps, wonderfully, in the footsteps of Iblis (Satan)?
چو ابلیسست دجالی که او راستندانم چون بود حالی که او راست
For the Dajjal he has is like Iblis,
I do not know how his state will be.
چو دجالت یکی دیوست مکاریکی دنیا یکی نفس ستمگار
For your Dajjal is a cunning demon,
one is the world, and one is the tyrannical self (ego).
کسی با این همه دجال سرکشچگونه زو برآید یک نفس خوش
Anyone with all these rebellious Dajjals,
how can a single happy breath come from him?
بسا مهدی دل پاکیزه رفتارکزین دجال دنیا شد گرفتار
Many a Mahdi-hearted, pure-acting person
has been captured by this Dajjal of the world.
بسا خونا که این دجال کردشنه روزی ده هزاران سال کردش
Many are the bloods this Dajjal has spilled,
not for a day, but for ten thousand years.'
