(3) The Tale of the Prophet's Saying about the Newborn Child

Text and Translation

Thus did the Prophet speak to his companions:
'The infant who is born of a mother,
When it is cast down upon the earth,
Becomes exceedingly helpless and crying.
But when it beholds the light of this world,
And sees the vastness of the earth and sky,
It will never desire the womb once more,
Nor will it ever again be trapped in darkness.
He who departs from the bond of this narrow nest,
Goes forth to the vast plain of the next world.
Indeed, the state of that person is exactly the same,
As one who intends to leave the womb for the world.
Just as that child came into a world,
And would never wish to return to the womb for a moment,
Whoever departs from this world to the other world,
I have said, the state of your child is exactly like that.
O heart, since your soul is not of this world,
Set this world on fire if you are a person of soul.
If your heart cannot show you the way forward,
How will you lead the way within your own form?
For if any path can be traversed to those who went before,
Know for certain that it can only be done through the soul.
Within the temple of the heart, build a sanctuary,
And from that sanctuary, make a path toward the Truth.
If you perform a deed, make it of the color of the soul;
Do not display it on the tip of a pole, keep it hidden.
If you merely change your garment, it is not fitting,
For it is He who sews, the cloak is not in your hand.
But if you are able, like true men,
Pass beyond the garment, and transform the soul.'
