اسیری را به صد درد و ندامتبه دوزخ می برند اندر قیامت
They take a captive with a hundred pains and regrets
To Hell on the Day of Resurrection.
زند انگشت و دیده برکند زودبه خواری دیده بر خاک افکند زود
He quickly strikes his fingers and plucks out his eyes,
And swiftly throws his eyes upon the dust in abasement.
چنین گوید که از دیده چه مقصودنخواهم دیده بی دیدار معبود
He says thus, "What is the purpose of these eyes?
I do not want eyes without the sight of the Worshipped One.
اگر دیدار معبودم نباشدز دیده هیچ مقصودم نباشد
If the sight of my Worshipped One is not to be,
I have no purpose at all for my eyes.
چو مقصودم نخواهد گشت حاصلنه دیده خواهم و نه جان و نه دل
Since my goal will not be achieved,
I want neither eyes, nor soul, nor heart.
حجابت گر از آن حضرت بهشت استندارم زهره تا گویم که زشت است
If your veil from His Presence is Paradise,
I do not have the courage to say that it is ugly.
بهشتی را بخود گر باز خوانینیندیشی که از حق بازمانی
If you call Paradise to yourself,
Do you not consider that you will be held back from the Truth?
چه می گویم کسی کز ماهروییشود از ناتوانی همچو مویی
What am I saying? Someone who, because of a moon-faced beauty,
Becomes like a hair out of weakness,
به یک جو زر کند صدگونه کرداربهشتی چون بنستاند زهی کار
For a single barleycorn of gold will do a hundred kinds of deeds;
When one does not accept a paradise, what an extraordinary act!
ولیکن این سخن با مرد راه استنه با دیوانه و دیوان سیاه است
But these words are for the man of the Path,
Not for the madman and the black demons."
