Section 4 - The Tale and the Exemplum

Text and Translation

I heard that Shibli along with a group
Was traveling in the desert toward a mountain.
On the way, he saw a skull filled with wind,
Which cried out from the blowing wind.
He picked up that wandering skull,
And saw, oh wonder, an inscription written upon it,
Which read: "Look, for this is the head of a sorrowful man,
Who lost both this world and the Hereafter."
When Shibli read that disturbing inscription,
He let out a cry and stood bewildered.
He said to his companions, "This head on such a path
Is the head of one of the men of the divine court.
For whoever does not gamble away both worlds
Will not become a confidant in the sanctuary of union.
If you also forsake both worlds,
Just as that man did, you are one of His men.
You traverse several leagues in hardship,
So that perhaps a single grain of gold falls into your grasp.
Yet on the path of Truth you sleep until night like this,
And have not walked a single step on the path of righteousness.
You cannot obtain a grain of gold without a hundred pains,
Yet you hasten toward Truth without bearing any pain.
When the patrol seizes you in the bright day,
What hope will you have in the dark night?
You say that you desire nothing but Truth:
'In truth, I do not want Paradise and the houris.'
You are foul water in a tight rag;
You do not deserve Paradise, oh completely shameful one.
Your courage turns to water from a mere lion;
How will you endure in that awe?
With a single pain, the intellect falls from its feet;
How could the intellect remain steadfast there?"
