عزیزی بد که تا شد شصت سالههوای گوشت بودش یک نواله
There was a dear man who, until he reached sixty years of age,
Had a craving for a single morsel of meat.
اگرچه دست می دادش ولیکننبود از نفس نامعلوم ایمن
Although he had the means to get it, nevertheless,
He was not safe from his insatiable ego.
مگر روزی شنود از دور بوییروان شد نفس را از دیده جویی
Until one day, he smelled a scent from afar;
A stream flowed from his eyes for the sake of his ego.
که چون شد شصت سال از بهر اللهازین بریان مرا یک لقمهٔ خواه
Saying, 'Since sixty years have passed, for the sake of Allah,
Ask for a morsel of this roasted meat for me.'
دلش بر نفس خود می سوخت برخاستکه تا بوکش تواند لقمهٔ خواست
His heart burned with pity for his ego; he rose up,
So that perhaps he could ask for a morsel.
روان شد بر پی آن بوی بسیارز زندان بوی می آمد پدیدار
He eagerly followed the trail of that smell;
The smell was coming from a prison.
بزد در تا در زندان گشادندیکی را داغ بر ران می نهادند
He knocked on the door until they opened the prison door;
They were placing a brand on someone's thigh.
ز داغش بوی بریان می برآمدوزان غم نفس را جان می برآمد
From his branding, the smell of roasted meat arose,
And from that anguish, the soul of the ego was expiring.
چو پیر آن دید بی خود گشت در حالچو مرغی می زد اندر ره پر و بال
When the old man saw this, he lost his senses instantly;
He flapped his wings and feathers on the path like a bird.
زبان بگشاد کای نفس زبون گیراگر بریانت می باید کنون گیر
He opened his tongue, saying, 'O base-taking ego,
If you want roasted meat, take it now!
ز دوری بوی بریانی شنیدیچو بریانی بدیدی در رمیدی
From afar you smelled the scent of a roast;
When you saw the roast, you fled in terror.
عزیزان را چنین بریان دهد دستتو پنداری که این آسان دهد دست
Such roasts are handed to the dear ones;
Do you think this is easily obtained?
ترا چون نیست روزی چند سوزیکه نتوان شد برون از پیش روزی
Since it is not your destined provision, why do you burn?
For one cannot step outside of one's provision.
برو دل گرم کن در سوز عقبیکه تا در سایه مانی روز عقبی
Go, warm your heart in the burning of the Hereafter,
So that you may remain in the shade on the Day of Judgment.
ترا دل هست لیکن هست معزولولی در آرزوی نفس مشغول
You have a heart, but it is dismissed from its duty,
And is instead preoccupied with the desires of the ego.
مثال رهبران این جزیرهمثال آن بز است و آن حظیره
The example of the leaders of this island,
Is the example of that goat and that enclosure.
که تا آن بز قدم بیرون نهادستبسی سر در طغار خون نهادست
For as soon as that goat stepped outside,
It placed its head into a basin of blood many times.
پی خود گیر خیز ای خیره سرکشگلیم خود ز آب تیره برکش
Follow your own path and rise, O stubborn, rebellious one!
Pull your own blanket out of the murky water.
بزن گردن کزین نبود دریغینهاد کافر خود را به تیغی
Strike the neck, for there is no regret in this;
Put your infidel nature to the sword.
ازین کافر مسلمانی نیایدکه از رهزن نگه بانی نیاید
No Muslimhood will come from this infidel;
For a highway robber cannot become a guardian.
نه هرگز از فضولی سیر گرددنه هرگز هیچ کارش دیر گردد
It will never be satiated with its excess,
Nor will any of its affairs ever be delayed.
وگر دیرش دهد یک آرزو دستسگی گردد ز خشم اما سگی مست
And if a desire is granted to it late,
It turns into a dog out of anger, a rabid dog.
گر از یک کام او گیری کنارهزند در یک زمانت صد هواره
If you abstain from one of its desires,
It will shout a hundred cries at you in a moment.
خریست این نفس خر را بنده بودنکجا باشد نشان زنده بودن
This ego is a donkey; to be a slave to a donkey,
How can that be a sign of being alive?'
