به گورستان یکی دیوانه بگریستبدو گفتند اندر گورها کیست؟
A madman wept in a graveyard
They asked him, 'Who is inside the graves?'
چنین گفت او که مشتی خلق مردارولیکن اوفتاده در نمک سار
He said thus, 'A handful of dead people,
But they have fallen into a salt-marsh.
چو زیر خاک یکسر خاک گردندنمک گردند و یکسر پاک گردند
When beneath the earth they entirely turn to dust,
They become salt and are completely purified.
ولی گر نبود از ایمان نمکشاندر آتش افکند دور فلکشان
But if they lack the salt of faith,
The cycle of heaven will cast them into the fire.
سفر این است و راه این و قرار اینز خود بگذر که کار این است و بار این
This is the journey, this is the path, and this is the resting place;
Pass beyond yourself, for this is the task and this is the burden.
دریغا کاین سفر را دستگه نیستبه تاریکی در افتادیم و ره نیست
Alas, there are no provisions for this journey;
We have fallen into darkness and there is no path.
یقین می دان که راهی بی کران استرهی تیره چراغش نور جان است
Know for certain that the road is boundless,
A dark path whose lamp is the light of the soul.
برو برکش خوشی ناخن ز دنیادل و جان را منور کن به عقبی
Go, gladly tear your nails away from the world;
Illuminate your heart and soul with the hereafter.
اگر بی دانش از گیتی شوی دوربماند چشم جان جاوید بی نور
If you depart from the world without knowledge,
The eye of the soul will remain eternally sightless.
جهان پاک را چشمی دگر دانکه چشم آنست وین یک سایهٔ آن
Consider the pure realm to have another kind of eye,
For that is the true eye, and this one is merely its shadow.
اگر خواهی که آن چشمت شود بازبرو جان در کمال دانش انداز
If you wish for that eye to be opened to you,
Go and plunge your soul into the perfection of knowledge.
که بعد از مرگ جان مرد دانابود بر هرچ رای آرد توانا
For after death, the soul of a wise man
Is capable of whatever it wills to do.
چو تن را قوت باید تا فزایدز دانش نیز جان را قوت باید
Just as the body needs food to grow,
The soul also requires nourishment from knowledge.
مرو بی دانشی در راه گمراهکه راه دور و تاریک است و پرچاه
Do not travel aimlessly on the path without knowledge,
For the road is long, dark, and full of pits.
چراغ علم و دانش پیش خود داروگرنه در چه افتی سرنگونسار
Hold the lamp of science and knowledge before you,
Or else you will fall headlong into a well.
کسی کاو را چراغی مستقیم استچراغش را ز باد تند بیم است
Even one whose lamp burns steady and straight,
Has fear of the fierce wind for his lamp.
کسی کاو را چراغ دانشی نیستیقین دانم که در آسایشی نیست
One who possesses no lamp of knowledge,
I know for certain that he is not in peace.
ز دو چیزت کمال است اندرین راهفنای محض یا نه جانت آگاه
In this path, your perfection lies in two things:
Absolute annihilation or an awakened soul.
وگر دانش بود کردار نبودترا و دانشت را بار نبود
And if there is knowledge but no action,
You and your knowledge will bear no fruit.
سخن چون از سر دانش برآیداز آن دل نور آسایش برآید
When speech arises from knowledge,
The light of comfort emerges from that heart.
سخن گر گویی و آهسته گوییترا هرگز نیارد زردرویی
If you speak, and speak gently,
It will never bring you disgrace.
حکیمی خوش زبان پاکیزه گفته ستکه در زیر زبان مردم نهفته ست
A sweet-speaking sage has beautifully said,
That a person is hidden beneath their tongue.
تو گر داننده باشی و نگویینخواهی بندهٔ حق را نکویی
If you are knowledgeable and do not speak,
You do not wish well upon God's servant.
چو یزدان گوهرت داده ست بسیاربه شکر آن زبان را کن گهربار
Since God has given you many jewels,
In gratitude, make your tongue shower jewels.
به دانش کوش گر بینا دلی توچرا آخر چنین بی حاصلی تو؟
Strive for knowledge if you have an insightful heart;
Why, after all, are you so barren of harvest?
اگر بر هم نهی صد پارساییچو علمت نیست کی یابی رهایی!؟
If you pile up a hundred layers of piety,
When you lack knowledge, how will you find deliverance!?
بود بی علم زاهد سخره ی دیوقدم در علم زن ای مرد کالیو
An ascetic without knowledge is the mockery of the devil;
Step into knowledge, O foolish man!'
