Section 3 - The Tale and the Parable

Text and Translation

Someone asked that crazed madman,
"What is the world?" He said, "Soap foam.
Take that foam on a blowpipe and blow into it,
Bring forth a world from that blowpipe.
Behold this beautiful, colorful shape,
Which becomes manifest from that blowpipe.
Although its form is quite captivating,
It is a second image that the cross-eyed sees.
Annihilation is its kingdom and perishing is its master,
Its foundation is 'Everything is perishing'.
Its inside is wind, and it itself is absolute nothingness,
From nothing comes nothing, why do you twist and turn?
It perishes and suddenly seems lost,
The world is lost in nothingness, and nothingness is lost in the world.
If the light of your heart becomes visible,
Neither doors nor walls will remain in your eyes.
Everything will become lost in the heart like a mote,
Indeed, a drop becomes lost in the ocean.
The staff in the hand of Moses became a dragon,
It swallowed all falsehood and became a staff again.
I have told all the secrets openly,
Finally, throw away the veil from before yourself.
If you tear this curtain apart,
You will see and know nothing but the One.
Bravo, Attar, may you be of pleasant speech,
And may you benefit from this speech.
If you were not upon the branch of meaning,
They would not have made you so bold in meaning."
