Text and Translation

This discourse has no end or completion;
O Friend of God, why did you kill the crow?
For the sake of the decree, what was the wisdom of the command?
A little of its secrets must be shown.
The cawing and the cry of the black crow
Is constantly wishing for long life in this world.
Like Iblis, who, from the Pure and Unique God,
Requested the life of the physical body until the Resurrection.
He said: 'Respite me until the Day of Judgment.'
Would that he had said: 'We have repented, our Lord!'
Life without repentance is entirely an agony of death;
The present death is being absent from God.
Life and death, both of these are sweet with God;
Without God, the Water of Life is fire.
That was also due to the effect of the curse,
That in such a Divine Presence he was seeking long life.
To ask God for something other than God
Is an illusion of gain and an absolute loss.
Especially a lifetime drowned in estrangement,
Behaving like a fox in the presence of the Lion.
'Give me more life so that I may regress further;
Increase my respite so that I may become lesser,'
So that he became the target of the curse;
Evil is the one who seeks the curse.
A sweet life lies in nurturing the soul in closeness;
The life of the crow is for eating dung.
'Give me more life so that I may eat dung;
Give me this eternally, for I am of a very evil essence.'
If that foul-mouthed one were not a dung-eater,
He would say: 'Deliver me from the nature of the crow!'
