دفتر پنجم - بخش ۳۵ - در بیان آنک ما سوی الله هر چیزی آکل و ماکولست هم‌چون آن مرغی کی قصد صید ملخ می‌کرد و به صید ملخ مشغول می‌بود و غافل بود از باز گرسنه کی از پس قفای او قصد صید او داشت اکنون ای آدمی صیاد آکل از صیاد و آکل خود آمن مباش اگر چه نمی‌بینیش به نظر چشم به نظر دلیل و عبرتش می‌بین تا چشم نیز باز شدن / Book Five - Section 35 - Explaining that everything besides God is both consumer and consumed, like that bird which intended to hunt a locust and was busy hunting the locust, oblivious to the hungry falcon behind its back which intended to hunt it. Now, O human hunter and consumer, do not feel secure from your own hunter and consumer, even if you do not see him with your physical eye, see him with the eye of proof and contemplation so that the physical eye also opens.

مرغکی اندر شکار کرم بود
گربه فرصت یافت او را در ربود

آکل و ماکول بود و بی خبر
در شکار خود ز صیادی دگر

دزد گرچه در شکار کاله ایست
شحنه با خصمانش در دنباله ایست

عقل او مشغول رخت و قفل و در
غافل از شحنه ست و از آه سحر

او چنان غرقست در سودای خود
غافلست از طالب و جویای خود

گر حشیش آب و هوایی می خورد
معده حیوانش در پی می چرد

آکل و ماکول آمد آن گیاه
هم چنین هر هستیی غیر اله

و هو یطعمکم و لا یطعم چو اوست
نیست حق ماکول و آکل لحم و پوست

آکل و ماکول کی ایمن بود
ز آکلی که اندر کمین ساکن بود

امن ماکولان جذوب ماتمست
رو بدان درگاه کو لا یطعم است

هر خیالی را خیالی می خورد
فکر آن فکر دگر را می چرد

تو نتانی کز خیالی وا رهی
یا بخسپی که از آن بیرون جهی

فکر زنبورست و آن خواب تو آب
چون شوی بیدار باز آید ذباب

چند زنبور خیالی در پرد
می کشد این سو و آن سو می برد

کمترین آکلانست این خیال
وآن دگرها را شناسد ذوالجلال

هین گریز از جوق اکال غلیظ
سوی او که گفت ما ایمت حفیظ

یا به سوی آن که او آن حفظ یافت
گر نتانی سوی آن حافظ شتافت

دست را مسپار جز در دست پیر
حق شدست آن دست او را دستگیر

پیر عقلت کودکی خو کرده است
از جوار نفس که اندر پرده است

عقل کامل را قرین کن با خرد
تا که باز آید خرد زان خوی بد

چونک دست خود به دست او نهی
پس ز دست آکلان بیرون جهی

دست تو از اهل آن بیعت شود
که یدالله فوق ایدیهم بود

چون بدادی دست خود در دست پیر
پیر حکمت که علیمست و خطیر

کو نبی وقت خویشست ای مرید
تا ازو نور نبی آید پدید

در حدیبیه شدی حاضر بدین
وآن صحابه بیعتی را هم قرین

پس ز ده یار مبشر آمدی
هم چو زر ده دهی خالص شدی

تا معیت راست آید زانک مرد
با کسی جفتست کو را دوست کرد

این جهان و آن جهان با او بود
وین حدیث احمد خوش خو بود

گفت المرء مع محبوبه
لا یفک القلب من مطلوبه

هر کجا دامست و دانه کم نشین
رو زبون گیرا زبون گیران ببین

ای زبون گیر زبونان این بدان
دست هم بالای دستست ای جوان

تو زبونی و زبون گیر ای عجب
هم تو صید و صیدگیر اندر طلب

بین ایدی خلفهم سدا مباش
که نبینی خصم را وآن خصم فاش

حرص صیادی ز صیدی مغفلست
دلبریی می کند او بی دلست

تو کم از مرغی مباش اندر نشید
بین ایدی خلف عصفوری بدید

چون به نزد دانه آید پیش و پس
چند گرداند سر و رو آن نفس

کای عجب پیش و پسم صیاد هست
تا کشم از بیم او زین لقمه دست

تو ببین پس قصه فجار را
پیش بنگر مرگ یار و جار را

که هلاکت دادشان بی آلتی
او قرین تست در هر حالتی

حق شکنجه کرد و گرز و دست نیست
پس بدان بی دست حق داورکنیست

آنک می گفتی اگر حق هست کو
در شکنجه او مقر می شد که هو

آنک می گفت این بعیدست و عجیب
اشک می راند و همی گفت ای قریب

چون فرار از دام واجب دیده است
دام تو خود بر پرت چفسیده است

بر کنم من میخ این منحوس دام
از پی کامی نباشم طلخ کام

درخور عقل تو گفتم این جواب
فهم کن وز جست و جو رو بر متاب

بسکل این حبلی که حرص است و حسد
یاد کن فی جیدها حبل مسد

English translation

A little bird was hunting a worm; A cat found an opportunity and snatched it away. It was both eater (consumer) and eaten, and unaware of another hunter while hunting its own prey. The thief, although busy stealing goods, is pursued by the police officer alongside his enemies. His mind is occupied with the baggage, the lock, and the door, heedless of the police officer and of the morning sigh. He is so immersed in his own fantasy that he is unaware of his own seeker and pursuer. If the grass consumes water and air, the animal's stomach grazes upon it in turn. That plant became both eater and eaten; likewise is every existence besides God. 'And He feeds you and is not fed,' since He is like that; Truth is not eaten, nor does He consume flesh and skin. How can the eater and eaten ever be secure from a consumer who lies in ambush? The security of those who are eaten is the attraction of mourning; go to that court which 'is not fed.' Every fantasy is consumed by another fantasy; one thought grazes upon another thought. You cannot escape from a fantasy, or sleep so deeply that you can leap out of it. Thought is like wasps and your sleep is like water; when you wake up, the flies return. Many wasps of fantasy flutter within; they pull you this way and that, and lead you away. This fantasy is the lowest of consumers; the Almighty knows the others. Look, flee from the thick crowd of devourers toward Him who said, 'We are your protector.' Or toward the one who has found that protection, if you cannot hasten toward that Protector. Do not surrender your hand except into the hand of a spiritual master (Pir); that hand of his has become the helper of God. Your intellect's master has adopted childish habits from the neighborhood of the lower self (nafs) which is behind the veil. Associate your perfect intellect with wisdom, so that wisdom may return from that bad habit. When you place your hand in his hand, you will escape from the grasp of the devourers. Your hand will join those who took the oath of allegiance where 'the hand of God is above their hands.' Once you have placed your hand in the hand of the Pir, the Pir of wisdom who is all-knowing and eminent, who is the prophet of his own time, O disciple, so that the light of the Prophet may shine from him. You became present at Hudaybiyyah in this manner, and joined those companions in the oath of allegiance. Thus you became one of the ten promised paradise; you became pure like ten-out-of-ten refined gold. So that companionship may be true, for a person is paired with the one he loves. He is with him in this world and the next; and this is the saying of the good-natured Ahmad (Muhammad). He said, 'A man is with his beloved; the heart is never separated from its desired goal.' Wherever there is a trap and bait, do not sit long; go, take the prey, and observe those who take the prey. O capturer of the prey, know this: there is always a hand above another hand, O youth. You are both vulnerable prey and a capturer, O wonder! You are both the hunt and the hunter in this search. Do not be 'a barrier before them and behind them,' so that you fail to see the enemy, and that enemy is obvious. The greed of hunting makes one heedless of being prey; he plays the heart-stealer, yet he is heartless. Do not be less than a bird in its chirping; the sparrow saw what was before and behind it. When it approaches the seed, looking front and back, how many times does it turn its head and face in that moment, saying, 'O wonder, there is a hunter before and behind me, so that out of fear I may withdraw my hand from this morsel.' Look at the story of the wicked ones behind you; look ahead at the death of your companion and neighbor, who were destroyed without any physical instrument; He is your companion in every state. God's punishment has no mace, no hand, and no weapon; so know that without a hand, God is the judge. He who used to say, 'If God exists, where is He?' under torture, he would confess, 'He is He.' He who used to say, 'This is distant and strange,'; would shed tears and say, 'O Near One!' Since fleeing from the trap has been seen as mandatory, your trap is already stuck to your wing. I will tear out the peg of this ill-fated trap; I will not be bitter-mouthed for the sake of any pleasure. I spoke this answer in accordance with your intellect; understand, and do not turn away from searching. Sever this rope which is greed and envy; remember: 'Around her neck is a rope of twisted palm-fiber.'
