He replied: 'It is called tears (water of the eye) depending on what the weeper has seen. If they have seen the yearning for God and weep, or regret a sin, their prayer is not ruined, but rather attains perfection, for there is no prayer except with the presence of the heart. And if they have seen physical suffering or separation from a child, their prayer is ruined, for the essence of prayer is the abandonment of the body and the abandonment of children in the manner of Abraham, who sacrificed his son for the completion of prayer and surrendered his body to Nimrod's fire; and the command came to the Prophet, peace be upon him, regarding these qualities: Follow the religion of Abraham, and There has certainly been for you an excellent pattern in Abraham.'

English translation

A certain person asked a Mufti in secret: 'If someone weeps with lamentation during prayer, Is his prayer indeed made void, Or is his prayer valid and perfect?' He replied: 'What is the reason that it is called the water of the eye (tears)? You must observe what he saw that made him weep. What did the tear see from the unseen world, That made it flow from its spring? If that needy soul has beheld that world, His prayer will gain splendor and glory from his lamentation. But if that weeping was due to physical pain or grief, The thread has snapped, and the spindle too is broken.'
