Original content

English translation

Do not pluck out your feathers, but detach your heart from them, because the enemy is the condition for this spiritual struggle. When there is no enemy, struggle becomes impossible; if you have no lust, there can be no obedience (to the command to restrain it). There can be no patience when you have no desire; when there is no adversary, what need is there for your strategies? Beware, do not castrate yourself, do not become a monk, for chastity is pledged to lust (it depends on lust to exist). Without desire, forbidding desire is impossible; one cannot act as a warrior against the dead. He (God) has said 'Spend (in charity),' so earn a livelihood, because there can be no expenditure without a previous income. Although He declared 'Spend' in absolute terms, you should read it as: 'Earn, then spend.' Just as the King commanded 'Be patient,' there must be a desire from which you turn your face. Therefore, 'Eat' is for the sake of the snare of desire; afterwards, 'Do not exceed' is chastity. When that which is carried (the subject) does not exist with him, that which is carried upon it (the attribute) cannot exist. When the pain of patience is not yours, the condition is not met, so the reward does not descend. How beautiful is that condition and how joyous is that reward, that heart-soothing, soul-exalting reward!
