ای دهنده قوت و تمکین و ثبات
خلق را زین بی ثباتی ده نجات

اندر آن کاری که ثابت بودنیست
قایمی ده نفس را که منثنیست

صبرشان بخش و کفه میزان گران
وا رهانشان از فن صورتگران

وز حسودی بازشان خر ای کریم
تا نباشند از حسد دیو رجیم

در نعیم فانی مال و جسد
چون همی سوزند عامه از حسد

پادشاهان بین که لشکر می کشند
از حسد خویشان خود را می کشند

عاشقان لعبتان پر قذر
کرده قصد خون و جان همدگر

ویس و رامین خسرو و شیرین بخوان
که چه کردند از حسد آن ابلهان

که فنا شد عاشق و معشوق نیز
هم نه چیزند و هواشان هم نه چیز

پاک الهی که عدم بر هم زند
مر عدم را بر عدم عاشق کند

در دل نه دل حسدها سر کند
نیست را هست این چنین مضطر کند

این زنانی کز همه مشفق تراند
از حسد دو ضره خود را می خورند

تا که مردانی که خود سنگین دلند
از حسد تا در کدامین منزلند

گر نکردی شرع افسونی لطیف
بر دریدی هر کسی جسم حریف

شرع بهر دفع شر رایی زند
دیو را در شیشه حجت کند

از گواه و از یمین و از نکول
تا به شیشه در رود دیو فضول

مثل میزانی که خشنودی دو ضد
جمع می آید یقین در هزل و جد

شرع چون کیله و ترازو دان یقین
که بدو خصمان رهند از جنگ و کین

گر ترازو نبود آن خصم از جدال
کی رهد از وهم حیف و احتیال

پس درین مردار زشت بی وفا
این همه رشکست و خصمست و جفا

پس در آن اقبال و دولت چون بود
چون شود جنی و انسی در حسد

آن شیاطین خود حسود کهنه اند
یک زمان از ره زنی خالی نه اند

وآن بنی آدم که عصیان کشته اند
از حسودی نیز شیطان گشته اند

از نبی برخوان که شیطانان انس
گشته اند از مسخ حق با دیو جنس

دیو چون عاجز شود در افتتان
استعانت جوید او زین انسیان

که شما یارید با ما یاریی
جانب مایید جانب داریی

گر کسی را ره زنند اندر جهان
هر دو گون شیطان بر آید شادمان

ور کسی جان برد و شد در دین بلند
نوحه می دارند آن دو رشک مند

هر دو می خایند دندان حسد
بر کسی که داد ادیب او را خرد

English translation

O Giver of strength, power, and constancy! Deliver creation from this inconstancy. In that work which is destined to be constant, grant stability to the soul which is bent. Grant them patience and make the scale of their balance heavy; deliver them from the craft of the image-makers. And ransom them from envy, O Generous One, so that they may not become the pelted devil through envy. In the transient blessings of wealth and the body, how the common people burn with envy! Behold the kings who lead armies, and out of envy slay their own kinsmen. The lovers of filthy toys, aiming at each other's blood and life. Read Vis and Ramin, and Khosrow and Shirin, to see what those fools did out of envy! For both the lover and the beloved perished; they are nothing, and their passion is nothing too. Holy is the Lord Who strikes non-existence against non-existence, and makes non-existence fall in love with non-existence. He causes envy to raise its head in the heart of no-heart; He makes the non-existent so desperately anxious for the existent. These women, who are the most compassionate of all, consume themselves with envy toward their co-wives. Then what of men, who are by nature hard-hearted— to what stage of envy must they have reached? Were it not for the subtle spell of the Divine Law (Shari'ah), everyone would tear apart the body of their rival. The Law devises a plan to ward off evil; it imprisons the devil in the bottle of proof. By means of witness, oath, and refusal to swear, so that the meddlesome devil may go into the bottle. Like a balance in which the satisfaction of two opposites is surely brought together, in jest and earnest. Know for certain that the Law is like the dry measure and the balance, through which adversaries escape from war and malice. If there were no balance, how could that adversary, through dispute, escape from the suspicion of injustice and deceit? Since in this ugly, unfaithful carcass (the world), there is all this jealousy, enmity, and cruelty, Then how would it be in that prosperity and fortune, when jinn and men become envious? Those devils are themselves ancient enviers; they are never for a single moment free from highway robbery. And those sons of Adam who have been slain by disobedience, have also become devils through envy. Read from the Prophet's Book how the devils of mankind have become of the same genus as the jinn devils through God's transformation. When the devil is powerless in temptation, he seeks help from these human beings, Saying, 'You are our allies, help us! You are on our side, show partisanship!' If anyone is robbed of his way in the world, both kinds of devil rejoice. And if anyone escapes with his life and becomes exalted in religion, those two envious ones lament. Both gnash the teeth of envy against the one to whom the Educator has granted wisdom.
