Book Five - Section 147 - The Angry Emir Going to Chastise the Ascetic

Original content

English translation

The Emir became like fire and leaped up straight, He said, 'Show me, where is the ascetic's house? So that with this heavy mace I may smash his head, That ignorant and arrogant head of his. What does he, the dog, know of commanding what is right? He is only a seeker of notoriety and fame, So that by this hypocrisy he may establish himself, And make himself known for something. For he has no talent of his own, except that He flatters and pesters this one and that. If he is mad and a seeker of mischief, The cure for a madman is the bull's whip, So that the devil may depart from his head; Without the beating of donkey-drivers, how will a donkey go?' The Emir leaped out, a mace in his hand, And at midnight came to the ascetic, half-drunk. In his rage, he wanted to kill the ascetic, But the ascetic hid himself under some wool. The ascetic was hearing those words from the Emir, Hidden under the wool of the rope-spinners. He said: 'To tell a man of his ugliness to his face, Only a mirror can dare, having hardened its face. One must have an iron, mirror-like face, To tell you: Look at your own ugly face!'
