گفت روبه صاف ما را درد نیست
لیک تخییلات وهمی خورد نیست

این همه وهم توست ای ساده دل
ورنه بر تو نه غشی دارم نه غل

از خیال زشت خود منگر به من
بر محبان از چه داری سؤ ظن

ظن نیکو بر بر اخوان صفا
گرچه آید ظاهرا زیشان جفا

این خیال و وهم بد چون شد پدید
صد هزاران یار را از هم برید

مشفقی گر کرد جور و امتحان
عقل باید که نباشد بدگمان

خاصه من بدرگ نبودم زشت اسم
آنک دیدی بد نبد بود آن طلسم

ور بدی بد آن سگالش قدرا
عفو فرمایند یاران زان خطا

عالم وهم و خیال طمع و بیم
هست ره رو را یکی سدی عظیم

نقشهای این خیال نقش بند
چون خلیلی را که که بد شد گزند

گفت هذا ربی ابراهیم راد
چونک اندر عالم وهم اوفتاد

ذکر کوکب را چنین تاویل گفت
آن کسی که گوهر تاویل سفت

عالم وهم و خیال چشم بند
آنچنان که را ز جای خویش کند

تا که هذا ربی آمد قال او
خربط و خر را چه باشد حال او

غرق گشته عقلهای چون جبال
در بحار وهم و گرداب خیال

کوهها را هست زین طوفان فضوح
کو امانی جز که در کشتی نوح

زین خیال ره زن راه یقین
گشت هفتاد و دو ملت اهل دین

مرد ایقان رست از وهم و خیال
موی ابرو را نمی گوید هلال

وآنک نور عمرش نبود سند
موی ابروی کژی راهش زند

صد هزاران کشتی با هول و سهم
تخته تخته گشته در دریای وهم

کمترین فرعون چست فیلسوف
ماه او در برج وهمی در خسوف

کس نداند روسپی زن کیست آن
وانک داند نیستش بر خود گمان

چون ترا وهم تو دارد خیره سر
از چه گردی گرد وهم آن دگر

عاجزم من از منی خویشتن
چه نشستی پر منی تو پیش من

بی من و مایی همی جویم به جان
تا شوم من گوی آن خوش صولجان

هر که بی من شد همه من ها خود اوست
دوست جمله شد چو خود را نیست دوست

آینه بی نقش شد یابد بها
زانک شد حاکی جمله نقشها

English translation

The fox said: 'Our purity contains no dregs (or pain), But the imaginings of suspicion are not easy to digest. All this is your imagination, O simple-hearted one; Otherwise, I harbor neither deceit nor malice toward you. Do not look at me through your own ugly suspicion; Why do you harbor suspicion against well-wishers? Maintain a good opinion of the pure brethren, Even if outwardly cruelty seems to come from them. When this evil imagination and suspicion arose, It severed a hundred thousand friends from each other. If a compassionate friend acted with severity and tested you, The intellect should not become suspicious. Especially since I was not of bad breed or ill-famed; What you saw was not evil, but a talisman. And even if that thought was bad in its measure, Friends surely forgive such error. The world of suspicion, imagination, greed, and fear Is a great barrier for the wayfarer. The forms of this fancy-painting imagination— How they brought harm even to Abraham, the Friend! The generous Abraham said, 'This is my Lord', When he fell into the world of imagination. He who pierced the pearl of interpretation Explained the mention of the star in this way. The world of imagination and fancy is a blindfold, Such that it tears a mountain from its place. When even his saying became 'This is my Lord', What then would be the state of a fool or a donkey? Intellects as vast as mountains are drowned In the seas of suspicion and the whirlpool of imagination. Mountains are disgraced by this deluge; Where is there safety except in the Ark of Noah? By this imagination, the highwayman of the path of certainty, The people of religion became seventy-two sects. The man of certainty is delivered from illusion and suspicion; He does not call a hair of the eyebrow the crescent moon. And he for whom the light of Umar (or discernment) is not a support, A crooked eyebrow-hair leads him astray. A hundred thousand ships of dread and terror Have been broken plank by plank in the sea of illusion. The least Pharaoh-like active philosopher Finds his moon eclipsed in the tower of imagination. No one knows who that harlot is, And he who knows has no suspicion about himself. Since your own imagination makes you bewildered, Why do you wander around the imagination of another? I am helpless in dealing with my own selfhood; Why do you sit full of selfhood before me? With my soul I seek selflessness, So that I may become the ball to that beautiful polo-stick. Whoever becomes selfless, all selves are indeed he; He becomes entirely the Beloved when he is no longer a friend to himself. The mirror that is free of any image gains value, Because it reflects all images.'
