قطب شیر و صید کردن کار او
باقیان این خلق باقی خوار او

تا توانی در رضای قطب کوش
تا قوی گردد کند صید وحوش

چون برنجد بی نوا مانند خلق
کز کف عقلست جمله رزق حلق

زانک وجد حلق باقی خورد اوست
این نگه دار ار دل تو صیدجوست

او چو عقل و خلق چون اعضا و تن
بسته عقلست تدبیر بدن

ضعف قطب از تن بود از روح نی
ضعف در کشتی بود در نوح نی

قطب آن باشد که گرد خود تند
گردش افلاک گرد او بود

یاریی ده در مرمه کشتی اش
گر غلام خاص و بنده گشتی اش

یاریت در تو فزاید نه اندرو
گفت حق ان تنصروا الله تنصروا

هم چو روبه صید گیر و کن فدیش
تا عوض گیری هزاران صید بیش

روبهانه باشد آن صید مرید
مرده گیرد صید کفتار مرید

مرده پیش او کشی زنده شود
چرک در پالیز روینده شود

گفت روبه شیر را خدمت کنم
حیله ها سازم ز عقلش بر کنم

حیله و افسونگری کار منست
کار من دستان و از ره بردنست

از سر که جانب جو می شتافت
آن خر مسکین لاغر را بیافت

پس سلام گرم کرد و پیش رفت
پیش آن ساده دل درویش رفت

گفت چونی اندرین صحرای خشک
در میان سنگلاخ و جای خشک

گفت خر گر در غمم گر در ارم
قسمتم حق کرد من زان شاکرم

شکر گویم دوست را در خیر و شر
زانک هست اندر قضا از بد بتر

چونک قسام اوست کفر آمد گله
صبر باید صبر مفتاح الصله

غیر حق جمله عدواند اوست دوست
با عدو از دوست شکوت کی نکوست

تا دهد دوغم نخواهم انگبین
زانک هر نعمت غمی دارد قرین

English translation

The Qutb is the lion, and hunting is his work, the rest of this creation feed upon his leftovers. As much as you can, strive for the contentment of the Qutb, so that he may grow strong and hunt wild beasts. When he is grieved, he becomes destitute like the rest of creation, since all nourishment for the throat comes from the hand of the intellect. For the delight of the throat is from eating his leftovers; keep this in mind if your heart is seeking prey. He is like the intellect, and the creation is like the limbs and body; the management of the body is bound to the intellect. The weakness of the Qutb is from the body, not from the spirit; weakness is in the ship, not in Noah. The Qutb is he who spins around himself, while the rotation of the heavens is around him. Offer some help in repairing his ship, if you have become his special slave and servant. Your help increases your own strength, not his; God said, 'If you help God, He will help you.' Like a fox, catch the prey and sacrifice it to him, to receive in return thousands of prey and more. That hunting of the disciple is fox-like; the hunting of the disciple is like a hyena taking a carcass. If you drag a carcass before him, it becomes alive; filth in the melon-garden becomes productive. The fox said: 'I will serve the lion; I will devise tricks and pluck [prey] by his intellect. Trickery and casting spells are my work; my business is deception and leading astray.' From the mountaintop he hastened toward the stream, and found that poor, lean donkey. Then he offered a warm greeting and went forward; he went before that simple-hearted dervish. He said: 'How are you in this dry desert, amidst the rocky terrain and arid place?' The donkey said: 'Whether I am in grief or in paradise, God has allotted my share, and I am grateful for it. I offer thanks to the Friend in good and evil, for indeed, in destiny there is always worse than bad. Since He is the Divider, complaining is infidelity; patience is required, for patience is the key to reward. All besides God are enemies; He is the Friend; how can complaining of the Friend to an enemy be good? As long as He gives me sour milk, I will not desire honey, for indeed, every blessing has a sorrow as its companion.'
