دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۳۴ - معنی ما شاء الله کان یعنی خواست خواست او و رضا رضای او جویید از خشم دیگران و رد دیگران دلتنگ مباشید آن کان اگر چه لفظ ماضیست لیکن در فعل خدا ماضی و مستقبل نباشد کی لیس عند الله صباح و لا مساء / Book Five - Section 134 - The meaning of 'Whatever God wills happens' is that His will is absolute, and you should seek His satisfaction and not be saddened by the anger or rejection of others; and that 'kana' (happened), though a past tense verb, does not imply past or future in God's action, for 'With God there is neither morning nor evening'

English translation

The servant's saying of 'Whatever God wills happens' Is not meant for you to become lazy in it, But rather it is an encouragement to sincerity and effort, To become more prepared and ready in that service. If they were to say, 'Whatever you desire, O generous one, The work is all yours, according to your wishes,' Then indeed laziness would be permissible, Since whatever you want and whatever you say would come to pass. But when they say, 'Whatever God wills happens,' The decree is His absolute and eternal decree, Then why do you not, with a hundredfold devotion, Revolve around His command like a true servant? If they said, 'Whatever the minister desires, His will prevails in all affairs,' You would quickly run around him with a hundredfold eagerness, So that he might shower his bounty and generosity upon your head. Or would you flee from the minister and his palace? That would certainly not be seeking his support. But in reverse, from these words, you have become lazy; Your perception and mind have become inverted. 'The command is the command of that master, beware!' What does this mean? It means sit less with anyone other than him. Revolve around the master since the command is his; He is the one who slays the enemy and saves the life of the friend. Whatever he wills, you will surely find that; Do not wander in vain, choose his service instead. Not that you say, 'Since he is the ruler, do not go near him,' Lest your record becomes black and your face turns pale. The true interpretation is that which warms you with inspiration, Makes you full of hope, agile, and reverent. And if it makes you lax, know this truth: It is a distortion (tabdil), and not a true interpretation (ta'wil). This teaching has come to warm the heart, To hold both hands of those who are hopeless. Ask the meaning of the Quran only from the Quran itself, And from someone who has set fire to his own desires, And has sacrificed himself and become humble before the Quran, Until his very spirit has become the Quran. The oil that has sacrificed itself entirely to the rose— Whether you smell the oil or the rose, it is the same fragrance.
