عاشقان را شادمانی و غم اوست
دست مزد و اجرت خدمت هم اوست

غیر معشوق ار تماشایی بود
عشق نبود هرزه سودایی بود

عشق آن شعله ست کو چون بر فروخت
هرچه جز معشوق باقی جمله سوخت

تیغ لا در قتل غیر حق براند
در نگر زان پس که بعد لا چه ماند

ماند الا الله باقی جمله رفت
شاد باش ای عشق شرکت سوز زفت

خود همو بود آخرین و اولین
شرک جز از دیده احول مبین

ای عجب حسنی بود جز عکس آن
نیست تن را جنبشی از غیر جان

آن تنی را که بود در جان خلل
خوش نگردد گر بگیری در عسل

این کسی داند که روزی زنده بود
از کف این جان جان جامی ربود

وانک چشم او ندیدست آن رخان
پیش او جانست این تف دخان

چون ندید او عمر عبدالعزیز
پیش او عادل بود حجاج نیز

چون ندید او مار موسی را ثبات
در حبال سحر پندارد حیات

مرغ کو ناخورده است آب زلال
اندر آب شور دارد پر و بال

جز به ضد ضد را همی نتوان شناخت
چون ببیند زخم بشناسد نواخت

لاجرم دنیا مقدم آمدست
تا بدانی قدر اقلیم الست

چون ازینجا وا رهی آنجا روی
در شکرخانه ابد شاکر شوی

گویی آنجا خاک را می بیختم
زین جهان پاک می بگریختم

ای دریغا پیش ازین بودیم اجل
تا عذابم کم بدی اندر وجل

English translation

For lovers, He is both joy and sorrow; He is also the wages and reward of service. If there is any spectator other than the Beloved, it is not love, it is a vain passion. Love is that flame which, when it blazes up, burns away everything except the Beloved. It wields the sword of 'no' (la) to slay other than God; look closely at what remains after 'no'. There remains 'except God' (illa Allah), the rest is all gone; rejoice, O great, association-burning Love! He Himself was the last and the first; do not see polytheism except from the squinting eye. Oh wonder, is there any beauty other than the reflection of That? The body has no motion except from the soul. That body which has a defect in its soul does not become sweet even if you put it in honey. This is known to one who was once alive and snatched a cup from the hand of this Soul of souls. And he whose eye has not seen those cheeks, to him this smoky heat seems to be the soul. Since he has not seen Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, Hajjaj also appears just to him. Since he has not seen the permanence of Moses' serpent, he imagines life in the sorcerers' ropes. The bird that has not tasted sweet, clear water, bathes its wings and feathers in brackish water. One cannot recognize anything except by its opposite; when one experiences the blow, one recognizes the caress. Therefore, this world has come first so that you may know the value of the realm of Alast. When you escape from here and go there, you will be eternally grateful in the sugar-house. You will say, 'There I was sifting dust, and fleeing from this pure world.' 'Alas, would that my appointed death had come before this, so that my torment in fear would have been less.'
