نیست را بنمود هست و محتشم
هست را بنمود بر شکل عدم

بحر را پوشید و کف کرد آشکار
باد را پوشید و بنمودت غبار

چون مناره خاک پیچان در هوا
خاک از خود چون برآید بر علا

خاک را بینی به بالا ای علیل
باد را نی جز به تعریف دلیل

کف همی بینی روانه هر طرف
کف بی دریا ندارد منصرف

کف به حس بینی و دریا از دلیل
فکر پنهان آشکارا قال و قیل

نفی را اثبات می پنداشتیم
دیده معدوم بینی داشتیم

دیده ای که اندر نعاسی شد پدید
کی تواند جز خیال و نیست دید

لاجرم سرگشته گشتیم از ضلال
چون حقیقت شد نهان پیدا خیال

این عدم را چون نشاند اندر نظر
چون نهان کرد آن حقیقت از بصر

آفرین ای اوستاد سحرباف
که نمودی معرضان را درد صاف

ساحران مهتاب پیمایند زود
پیش بازرگان و زر گیرند سود

سیم بربایند زین گون پیچ پیچ
سیم از کف رفته و کرباس هیچ

این جهان جادوست ما آن تاجریم
که ازو مهتاب پیموده خریم

گز کند کرباس پانصد گز شتاب
ساحرانه او ز نور ماهتاب

چون ستد او سیم عمرت ای رهی
سیم شد کرباس نی کیسه تهی

قل اعوذت خواند باید کای احد
هین ز نفاثات افغان وز عقد

می دمند اندر گره آن ساحرات
الغیاث المستغاث از برد و مات

لیک بر خوان از زبان فعل نیز
که زبان قول سستست ای عزیز

در زمانه مر ترا سه همره اند
آن یکی وافی و این دو غدرمند

آن یکی یاران و دیگر رخت و مال
وآن سوم وافیست و آن حسن الفعال

مال ناید با تو بیرون از قصور
یار آید لیک آید تا به گور

چون ترا روز اجل آید به پیش
یار گوید از زبان حال خویش

تا بدینجا بیش همره نیستم
بر سر گورت زمانی بیستم

فعل تو وافیست زو کن ملتحد
که در آید با تو در قعر لحد

English translation

He made the non-existent appear as existent and magnificent; He made the existent appear in the form of non-existence. He concealed the ocean and made the foam visible; He concealed the wind and showed you the dust. Like a minaret, the dust is spinning in the air; how could the dust rise on high by itself? You see the dust on high, O infirm one, but you do not see the wind except by way of inference. You see the foam moving in every direction, but foam has no movement without the ocean. You see the foam by sense perception, but the ocean through inference; just as thought is hidden, while speech and talk are manifest. We imagined negation to be affirmation; we possessed an eye that could only see the non-existent. The eye that has emerged in a state of drowsiness, how can it see anything except illusion and non-existence? Consequently, we became bewildered in error, when reality became hidden and fantasy appeared. How did He place this non-existence before our eyes? How did He conceal that reality from our sight? Bravo, O master weaver of magic, who showed the dregs as pure wine to those who turn away! Sorcerers measure out the moonlight quickly before the merchant and take gold as profit. They snatch the silver in this twisted manner; the silver is gone from the hand, and the linen is nothing. This world is a magician, and we are that merchant who buys measured moonlight from it. It measures out five hundred yards of linen in haste, magically from the light of the moon. When it has taken the silver of your life, O servant, the silver is gone, there is no linen, and the purse is empty! One must recite 'Say: I seek refuge', O One, behold, wailing from the blowers upon knots. Those sorceresses blow into the knots; help, help from their winning and our losing! But recite it from the tongue of action as well, for the tongue of speech is weak, O dear friend. In this world, you have three companions; one is faithful, and these two are treacherous. The first is friends, the second is goods and wealth; and the third, which is faithful, is your good deeds. Wealth will not come out with you from your palaces; the friend will come, but only as far as the grave. When the day of your death comes before you, the friend says through the tongue of their state: 'I am not your companion any further than this; I will stand for a moment at the head of your grave.' Your action is faithful; make it your refuge, for it will enter with you into the depths of the tomb.
