Book Five — Section 12 — On Mustafa, Peace Be Upon Him, Offering the Testimony of Faith to His Guest

Original content

English translation

This discourse has no end. Mustafa Offered faith, and that youth accepted it. That testimony which has been auspicious, Has opened the bound bonds. He became a believer; Mustafa said to him: 'Tonight also, be our guest.' He said: 'By God, I am your guest for eternity, Wherever I may be, wherever I may go.' 'Revived, liberated, and your doorkeeper, In this world and the next, at your table.' 'Whoever chooses other than this chosen table, In the end, his throat will ache from a bone.' 'Whoever goes to a table other than yours, Know that the devil is his companion sharing the bowl.' 'Whoever departs from your neighborhood, Without a doubt, the devil becomes his neighbor.' 'And if he goes on a journey far away without you, The evil devil is his companion and table-mate.' 'And if he sits upon a noble steed, He is the envier of the moon, but the devil is his rider behind him.' 'And if his beloved bears him a child, The devil will be a partner in his offspring.' In the Holy Book, God has said, 'Share with them,' Both in wealth and in children, O twilight! The Prophet spoke of this openly from the Unseen, In rare discourses to Ali: 'O Messenger of God, you have made the mission complete, Showing it like the sun without a cloud.' 'What you have done, two hundred mothers did not do; Jesus did not do with his spell for Lazarus.' 'Through you, my soul has now escaped from death; If Lazarus became alive, he died again after that moment.' The Arab became the guest of the Messenger that night; He drank only half of one goat's milk and closed his lips. The Prophet urged him, 'Drink the milk and eat the thin bread!' He said, 'I have become full, by God, without hypocrisy.' 'This is not pretense, nor self-aggrandizement, nor a trick; I am more satiated than I was last night.' All the household remained in amazement: 'This lamp has been filled with just one drop of oil!' 'That which was the food of an Ababil bird, Has become the satisfaction of such an elephant's stomach!' Whispering arose among the men and women: 'That elephant-bodied one is eating only the measure of a gnat!' The greed and illusion of infidelity were overturned; The dragon was satisfied with the food of an ant. That beggar-eyedness of unbelief departed from him; The spiritual food of faith made him plump and strong. He who was tossing and turning from the 'ox-hunger', Saw the fruit of Paradise, like Mary. The fruit of Paradise rushed toward his eyes; His hell-like stomach found peace. The essence of faith is a grand blessing and banquet, O you who have contented yourself with the mere words of faith!
