دفتر پنجم - بخش ۳۱ - در بیان آنک عقل و روح در آب و گل محبوس‌اند هم‌چون هاروت و ماروت در چاه بابل / Book Five - Section 31 - Explaining That Intellect and Spirit are Imprisoned in Water and Clay Like Harut and Marut in the Well of Babylon

Text and Translation

Like Harut and like Marut, those two pure ones,
Are bound here in a terrifying well.
They are in the lower, sensual world;
In this well they have been imprisoned due to sin.
Magic and the antidote to magic, without choice,
The good and the wicked learn from these two.
But first they advise him, saying: 'Behold,
Do not learn magic from us, do not gather it.
We teach this magic, O so-and-so,
For the sake of affliction and trial;
For trial requires the condition of free will,
And you would have no free choice without power.'
Desires are like sleeping dogs;
In them, good and evil are hidden.
Since there is no power, this row has slept,
Like pieces of firewood, motionless and silent,
Until a carcass appears in the midst,
The trumpet-blast of greed strikes upon the dogs.
When a donkey becomes a carcass in that street,
A hundred sleeping dogs are awakened by it.
Greeds that had gone into the concealment of the unseen
Made a raid and emerged from the collar.
Hair by hair, every dog becomes teeth,
And for the sake of deception, wagging its tail.
Half of its lower part is cunning, its upper part is anger,
Like a weak fire that finds firewood.
Flame upon flame arrives from the placeless,
The smoke of the blaze goes up to heaven.
A hundred such dogs are sleeping in this body;
Since there is no prey for them, they are hidden,
Or they are like falcons with eyes sewn shut,
In a veil, consumed by the love of a prey,
Until the hood is removed and it sees the prey,
And then it circles the mountain range.
The lust of a sick person remains quiet;
His mind inclines toward health.
But when he sees bread, apples, and melons,
Taste and the fear of sin come into conflict.
If he is patient, seeing them is his benefit;
That arousal is good for his weak nature.
But if there is no patience, then it is better unseen,
A distant arrow is better for an unarmored man.
